After tossing a no-hitter against the Suns on August 24, 2013, Victor Mateo (W, 3-2) stifled the Suns over seven innings of shutout ball Thursday night, earning the win after allowing just five hits while walking one batter and striking out a season-best nine batters.
Montgomery would get the scoring going in the top of the third inning, with Curt Casali driving in Jake Hager with a single into shallow center. The Biscuits would get a run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Taylor Motter in the seventh inning and received their final two runs in the ninth courtesy of solo home runs from Jake Hager (HR, 1) and Taylor Motter (HR, 1).
Anthony DeSclafani (L, 3-2) took the tough-luck loss for the Suns, allowing just one run on seven hits over six innings of work. He'd walk two batters and tie his season-high in strikeouts with seven in Thursday's loss.
Edgar Olmos allowed one run on two hits in his two innings of relief for the Suns, with Greg Nappo allowing a pair of solo home runs in the ninth inning.
Rafael Furcal hit two doubles on Thursday night, his third game with Jacksonville on a rehab assignment (strained left hamstring).
Hager's ninth inning solo shot was his first home run since September 1, 2012 when he was a member of the Bowling Green Hot Rods. Hager finished a perfect 4-for-4 on the night.
Mateo's nine strikeouts are the most he's had since he struck out ten batters on July 8, 2011 as a Member of the Bowling Green Hot Rods. That game would also see Mateo notch his first career no-hitter, holding the Lake County Captains hitless in seven innings in a game that Bowling Green would win 1-0.
The Suns and Biscuits will be back at it tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. ET at Bragan Field. Jacksonville will trot out the lefty Andrew Heaney (2-0, 1.48) to the mound on Friday night, and he's set to be opposed by right-hander Dylan Floro (1-1, 6.86) for Montgomery.
Suns fans can listen to Friday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or throughwww.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 6:50 p.m. ET with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show.
