Match-Up Between All-Star Pitchers Goes to Bend

July 17, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release

Walla Walla, Wa- The Sweets dropped game one to the Bend Elks on Thursday night, 6-2. The anticipated pitching match-up between two All-Stars kept the game close until the end.

The Sweets got on the board early when Connor Kopach and Myles Hager both scored on a wild pitch in the first inning. The ball got away from the catcher and he could not find it until Kopach had already crossed the plate, but by the time the ball was picked up by the dugout of the Elks, Hager had scored too.

The Elks would fight back with a run in the top of the second to make it 2-1. They would then tie it in the fifth and take the lead in the seventh. In both of those frames, they led off the inning with a double and it came back to bite Sweets' pitching.

Bend would add three more runs in the ninth inning to pull away from the Sweets and make the final score 6-2.

Micah Gorman for the Sweets put forth another good start in most likely his final appearance before the West Coast League's version of the Mid-Summer Classic. He threw six solid innings, only giving up two runs, seven hits and striking out three while walking none.

His counter part was just better as Patrick McGuff for the Elks threw eight and two-thirds innings, striking out eight and not giving up a hit after the third inning. At one point, he retired 14 straight Sweets.

The Sweets and the Elks will match-up again tomorrow at 7:05. It is Pink Night at Borleske for breast cancer awareness and it is also firework night.
