Match Preview: Sacramento Republic FC vs Real Monarchs SLC

August 21, 2015 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Sacramento Republic FC News Release

Sacramento Republic FC (10-8-4, 34 pts) will return home to face Real Monarchs SLC (2-13-7, 13 pts) on Saturday, August 22. Kickoff is 8:00 p.m. PDT at Bonney Field. The match will be broadcast live on CW31.

This will be the fourth and final match between Republic FC and Real Monarchs this season. So far the Monarchs lead the season series, having won the first matchup 1-0; the following two matchups have been 1-1 draws.

Republic FC enter the match after a 3-3 draw against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Friday, August 14. Republic FC scored two goals in the last ten minutes of the match to pull off the dramatic comeback draw.

Midfielder Ivan Mirkoviæ scored his first professional goal in stoppage time against Switchbacks FC. Mirkoviæ sent a long ball into the box from more than 40 yards out, sailing over the defense before bouncing into the top right corner of the goal, beating the goalkeeper and completing the comeback for Republic FC. Mirkoviæ has now recorded a goal and an assist in 21 appearances this season. He did not record a point for Republic FC in 21 USL appearances last season.

Forward Thomas Stewart scored the fastest goal in Republic FC history, scoring just 90 seconds into the match against Switchbacks FC. Stewart smashed the previous record held by Justin Braun, who scored in the 7th minute on April 24, 2015 against Orange County Blues FC. Stewart has scored three goals in his last three matches.

Real Monarchs enter the match winless in their last five matches. Despite their latest run of form, the Monarchs have played close matches in every match this season, recording a Western Conference leading seven draws and having 11 of their 15 remaining matches end with a goal differential of just one.

The Monarchs will be without arguably their leading offensive player in the match, Max Rauhofer, who is serving a five-match suspension. Rauhofer leads the Monarchs in goals (7), shots (46) and shots on goal (22) this season. Rauhofer has scored two of the Monarchs three goals against Republic FC this season.

The Monarchs will look to midfielders Ricardo Velazco, Lucas Baldin and Maikon Orellana and forward Emery Welshman to pick up the load while Rauhofer is suspended. The four combine for 26 of the Monarchs 57 points this season. Rauhofer has recorded 14 points himself. Velazco leads the Monarchs with four assists this season while Baldin and Welshman have each scored three goals this season, second most on the club.

The match will be broadcast live on CW31 and will also be streamed live at SacRepublicFC.com/matchday. Updates of the match will be provided via Twitter @SacRepublicFC or using #SACvSLC.
