ATLANTA - Atlanta United returns to action on Wednesday, June 20 when it hosts Chicago Fire at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16. The match is scheduled to kick-off at 7:30 p.m. EST and will be streamed live at atlutd.com/live.
Wednesday's match will be the first U.S. Open Cup fixture played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Atlanta defeated Charleston Battery 3-0 on June 6 in front of the largest crowd for a sporting event in Fifth Third Bank Stadium history (9,742). Andrew Carleton, Ezequiel Barco and Romario Williams scored to help Atlanta advance past the fourth round of the tournament for the second straight season. In MLS play , Atlanta sits atop the Supporters' Shield Standings with 33 points and is coming off a 2-0 win at Columbus on June 13.
Chicago advanced to the Round of 16 in dramatic fashion, beating Columbus Crew SC in an 11-round penalty shootout after the match remained 2-2 following 120 minutes of regular and extra time. Fire goalkeeper Richard Sanchez saved Columbus goalkeeper Logan Ketterer's penalty attempt and then scored the game-winning penalty, ending the shootout at 10-9. In MLS play, Chicago sits in seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings and is coming off a 2-2 draw at Colorado Rapids on June 13.
