MATCH PREVIEW | Minnesota United Face Critical Test Saturday against FC Edmonton
October 14, 2016 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
Minnesota United FC News Release
SAINT PAUL, Minn.-- Minnesota United (10W-8D-11L, 38pts) faces off with FC Edmonton (14W-8D-7L, 50pts) at National Sports Center Stadium on Saturday, October 15 in a match that could determine the Loons postseason fate. The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m. CT - fans can watch all the action live on My29 and ESPN3.
Minnesota United needs wins with just three matches left in the 2016 North American Soccer League regular season. The Loons are currently situated in the fourth and final playoff spot, but the position is precarious at best. United is tied on points with Rayo OKC, but have the edge in goal differential. There are several clubs within striking distance of the Loons, including Miami FC and the Tampa Bay Rowdies who face off Friday night. There are currently six clubs who could conceivably vie for the final playoff spot. Every match is critical moving forward and no team can afford to drop points at this juncture in the season.
Minnesota is coming off an extended road trip last week that saw it earn draws against Tampa Bay and Puerto Rico. United is 1-0-1 this season against Edmonton, defeating the Eddies in Edmonton in week two of the Spring Season and dropping a tough 1-0 result on the road in the Fall. The NASL's leading goalscorer, Christian Ramirez hopes to be back in the squad this weekend after missing his first career match with Minnesota United. Ramirez had appeared in 92 consecutive contests prior to going down in Tampa Bay with an ankle injury. United will need his scoring touch, having scored just eight goals in its previous ten matches.
With so many teams still in the hunt for the postseason with just three weeks to play, this weekend's slate of matches could be make-or-break for Minnesota United.
Saturday will mark the second to last regular season NASL match at National Sports Center Stadium for the Loons, with the final test coming on the last weekend of the regular season against the New York Cosmos. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. For tickets and information visit mnunitedtickets.com or call 763.4SOCCER.
