FC Edmonton Prepares to Close out Road Trip against Minnesota United FC
October 14, 2016 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
FC Edmonton News Release
FC Edmonton (14W-8D-7L) close out their two-game road trip against Minnesota United FC (10W-8D-11L), October 15 at 6:00 p.m. MT. The postseason-bound Eddies will be looking for their 15th North American Soccer League (NASL) win of the year.
A rotated Eddies squad dropped a 1-0 decision on Wednesday night versus the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Several players, including goalkeeper Tyson Farago, were inserted 2016 NASL Coach of Year nominee Colin Miller's Starting XI lineup for Wednesday's match, but the new-look squad was unable to get a result after going down a goal in the 11th minute of play. The Eddies are expected to see a more familiar lineup Saturday evening, with defender Adam Eckersley returning from suspension due to yellow card accumulation and captain Albert Watson fit to play after taking several knocks in last Sunday's contest versus Tampa Bay Rowdies.
With just three matches remaining in the the team's regular season schedule, the Eddies incentive will be to keep within striking distance of Fall Season leaders New York Cosmos, who sit five points ahead of the second-place Edmonton side with 38 points. A Fall Season title would guarantee the Eddies their first home postseason date in team history.
Fourth-place Minnesota United FC are coming off back-to-back draws and will be desperate to collect all three points in this weekend's match. The Rowdies and Miami FC trail the 'Loons in overall points, but hold a valuable game in hand that could prove the difference in who qualifies for the NASL postseason when all is said and done. Minnesota features one of the league's most effective strikers this season in Christian Ramirez. Ramirez currently leads all scorers with 16 goals this season, but will have to contend with the Eddies league-best defence, who have conceded just 17 goals all season.
It's the third and final meeting between the Eddies and 'Loons, who have each collected a win against each other this year. Minnesota walked away from the Eddies' home opener with a 2-0 win on April 10, following a pair of goals from Ben Speas. In their most recent match on August 14, Eddies forward Tomi Ameobi's goal in the 46th minute proved to be the lone goal and match-winner.
"I want us to be far more aggressive going forward on Saturday night [then we were against Fort Lauderdale]," Miller stated following Wednesday's contest. "We should have Albert Watson and Eckersley back for Saturday night, so that experience and quality will certainly add to the group."
FC Edmonton returns to action, Saturday, October 15 against Minnesota United FC at NSC Stadium. Kick-off in the match is set for 6:00 p.m. MT. Fans can take in the action at the Tavern on Whyte at 6:00 P.M MT. The match will be streamed live on NASL.com in Canada and the United States as well as broadcast live on ESPN 3 in the United States.
