January 2, 2003 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Harrisburg Heat News Release
Harrisburg, PA - Harrisburg Heat defender Genoni Martinez has been named the MISL Offensive Player of the Month for December, the league announced today. Martinez edged out Heat teammate David Bascome, Kansas City Comets forward Dino Delevski, and Cleveland Force striker Chris Stathopolous for the award.
Martinez notched three 3-point goals, five 2-point tallies, five assists and 24 points to tie Bascome for the team lead in scoring during December. The Mexico City, Mexico native also posted two game-winning goals and added 17 blocks on the defensive side of the ball for a Heat club that went 5-3 for the month.
The 27-year-old enjoyed his most productive outing of the month on December 29 vs. Baltimore. In that contest, Martinez posted two 3-point goals and six points to lead Harrisburg to an 11-2 victory over the Blast. Martinez recorded points in seven of the Heat's eight December contests, and registered six multi-point performances.
Martinez currently leads all MISL defenders and ranks seventh overall in MISL scoring with 46 points. He is on pace to score 87 points and block 75 shots this season, which would be the best statistical season ever posted by a Heat defender.
HEAT SIGNS STRIKER
The Heat also announced today that the club has signed forward Carlos Carrillo (pronounced kah-REE-oh) to an MISL offer sheet. As per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Carrillo, 31, brings an impressive resume to Harrisburg. The native of Mexico joined the prestigious club America of Mexico's First Division at the age of 14 in 1985, and has also played for Mexican First Division sides Pachuca (1992-93), Yucatan (1993-94), Toros Neza (1994-95), and Necaxa (1997). Carrillo also spent time with the Mexico Toros of the Continental Indoor Soccer League in 1995.
The 5-10, 165-pound target man, who has trained with the Heat for several weeks, will not be available for this Saturday's game against Kansas City at the Farm Show Arena (7:35 p.m. kickoff), but could suit up as early as January 10 in Cleveland.
