Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Brandon Martinez stepped up with a quality start on Wednesday afternoon, as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes ended a two-game skid with a 5-3 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm at The Epicenter.
Martinez (3-2) was touched for two first-inning runs, but faced the minimum over the next five innings, brushing off the early struggles to record the win.
The Storm took an early 2-0 lead, as Justin Miller cracked a solo homer, his ninth, and Casey McElroy delivered a two-out run-scoring hit.
The Quakes responded immediately with a run in the bottom of the inning, as Joc Pederson singled and then scored on a Pedro Baez double, making it 2-1.
Rancho got to Storm starter Matt Andriese (7-5) for three more in the second, taking the lead for good. Jonathan Garcia opened the inning with a double and then scored on a Jan Vazquez RBI single, tying the game at 2-2. Scott Wingo followed with his first of two bunt-singles on the day. With runners at second and third and no outs, Alexis Aguilar brought in the go-ahead run with an RBI groundout, putting Rancho in front at 3-2. Leon Landry followed with a sac fly, bringing in Wingo to make it 4-2.
That lead held for Martinez, as he gave the ball to Eammon Portice in the seventh, with Portice getting out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the Quakes in front.
Rancho plated an insurance run in the seventh, as Scott Wingo reached with a bunt then later scored on a Pederson sac fly, putting the Quakes up by three at 5-2.
Lake Elsinore made it tough at the end, picking up a run off of Scott McGough in the eighth, before Eric Eadington came on to get the final out of the eighth and work around a lead-off walk in the ninth, collecting his 16th save in the process.
The Quakes (11-16, 48-49) and Storm will meet in the rubber game of the three-game series on Thursday night, with Andres Santiago (5-3) taking on Burch Smith (9-4) in the finale. Thursday is another Buffalo Wild Wings Thirsty Thursday, as fans can enjoy $2 domestic 16-oz drafts and $2 24-oz Pepsi products throughout the night. Game time is 7:05pm.
