Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, CA - Bobby Doran returned to Lancaster after four starts in Double-A and picked up where he left off, shutting down Cal League lineups. On Tuesday night at The Hangar it was the San Jose Giants' turn.
Doran (7-4) allowed just two unearned runs and four hits - just two after the first inning - over 6 1/3 innings to beat the Giants, 4-3, and improve Lancaster's overall record to a season-best five games over .500 (50-45).
The Giants jumped out to a first inning lead thanks to an error and Doran's shaky start. The right-hander, who went 3-1 with a 5.57 ERA for Corpus Christi, tossed 35 pitches in the first inning. After a leadoff single and a walk, Ricky Oropesa hit a high popup to short centerfield that dropped in over second baseman Enrique Hernandez's glove for an error.
With two outs in the inning, Jarrett Parker singled to right field to score Carter Jurica and Joe Panik.
Doran would settle down and the JetHawks would take lead against Giants starter Taylor Rogers (7-8) by the fifth inning thanks to three run-scoring ground balls.
Chan Moon, who made his JetHawks debut in the game, led off the third inning with a single and reached third on a Rogers error and a fielders choice. He scored on Domingo Santana's ground ball to second.
Hernandez led off the fourth inning with his team-leading 23rd double and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Rafael Valenzuela ground ball. Grant Hogue scored on a bases loaded double play in the fifth to put the JetHawks ahead.
Lancaster scored a key insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Santana and Chris Epps started the inning by drawing four-pitch walks against reliever Shawn Sanford. Hernandez sacrificed the runners over and Sanford intentionally walked Valenzuela to load the bases for Roberto Peña. The catcher knocked one of his two singles on the night to drive in a run in his JetHawks debut.
Alex Burg homered off Patrick Urckfitz in the top of the ninth but the reliever was able to retire the side without allowing another run to notch his seventh save. He tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief of Doran.
The JetHawks (13-12, 50-45) take on the Giants (11-15, 49-47) in game two of the series at The Hangar on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm. Nick Tropeano will start against Jack Snodgrass.
