Lancaster Stormers News Release

The West Virginia Power exacted some payback against the Lancaster Barnstormers over the weekend.

After the Barnstormers swept the guys from Charleston in both series during the first half, the Power turned the tables this weekend, capping a three-game sweep with a 5-4, 10-inning victory on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park.

Teodoro Martinez delivered the game winner with a drive over the head of left fielder Devon Torrence, plating Nate Easley from second against Tyler LaPorte (0-1).

Lancaster sent the game to extra innings with a run in the top of the ninth. With one out, Jake Hoover drew a walk and stole second. Cleuluis Rondon picked him up with a ground single into right and took second on the throw home. The Barnstormers were unable to take the lead as Caleb Gindl struck out and Blake Allemand flied to the warning track in right center.

The Barnstormers could not get Allemand home from second in the top of the tenth. Alejandro De Aza hit a sharp grounder to first. Jimmy Paredes threw across the diamond, and Alberto Callaspo chased down Allemand for the first out. Kelly Dugan struck out. De Aza stole second and took third as the throw from Francisco Arcia rolled through Easley in center. Luis Guzman (1-0) struck out pinch hitter Nick Shumpert to end the inning.

Prior to the tying run, all of the offense came within the span of a full inning. In the bottom of the second, Tommy Shirley walked Edwin Espinal and Miles Williams. He bounced back to strike out new catcher Francisco Arcia, but Connor Kopach broke the scoreless tie with a double to left. Elmer Reyes followed with a three-run homer.

West Virginia only picked up one more hit for the remainder of regulation.

The Barnstormers answered with three runs in the third. With two outs, Allemand sliced a sinking liner to left which skipped part Martinez for a double. De Aza followed with a towering double to right center. Dugan ripped a double into the right field corner to cut the lead to 4-2. He would then score on a single up the middle by LeDarious Clark for the third run.

Both starters were lifted after the fourth inning, and the bullpens were sensational. Cameron Gann, Donald Goodson, Gabriel Moya and Scott Shuman combined to strike out eight and allow only two baserunners in five innings. Joe Testa threw two scoreless innings for West Virginia. Eleardo Cabrera and Junior Rincon put up a perfect inning apiece before Lancaster scored off closer Mike Broadway in the ninth.

The Barnstormers will take on Lexington on Tuesday at 6:30. Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:25.

NOTES: Dugan stretched his RBI streak to six games...Clark was thrown out stealing for the first time all season after 18 successes...He was thrown out trying to take third in the third inning...The Barnstormers fell to 8-7 in the second half and 38-37 on the season...They are 5-4 in extra inning games.
