Montgomery Biscuits News Release
PEARL, Mis. - The Biscuits (27-29) won their third-straight game, taking the series-opener against the Mississippi Braves (25-31) by a score of 5-0 on Sunday night at Trustmark Park.
J.D. Martin (4-7) made his 12th start of the season a memorable one, as the 35-year-old knuckleballer tossed six shutout innings, scattering just two hits and three walks to go along with a season-high seven strikeouts en route to the victory. Martin didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning when Daniel Lockhart singled off the righty.
Kyle Wright (3-6) got the start for the M-Braves, and after cruising through the top of the first, allowed back-to-back singles to Brandon Lowe and Dalton Kelly to open the second. Nathan Lukes then bounced out to second to score Lowe later in the inning, and the Biscuits had the only run they would need.
An inning later, Lowe hammered a two-run single into center field to put the Biscuits up, 3-0. The Rays number 14 prospect would finish the game 3-for-4 with the two RBIs and a walk.
In the seventh, Kelly delivered a sac fly and Lukes followed that up with an RBI-single to tally the right fielder's second-straight three-hit game. The Biscuits got a scoreless inning of relief from lefty Matt Krook, and two scoreless innings out of the bullpen from Yoel Espinal as Montgomery sealed their fifth shutout of the season and out-hit Mississippi, 13-2.
The Biscuits will try to make it four in a row on Monday night when Genesis Cabrera (4-3) goes head-to-head with Touki Toussaint (2-5) at 7:00 PM CT.
The Biscuits will return to Riverwalk Stadium on Friday, June 8, as they welcome the Chattanooga Lookouts for Ladies Night and MAX Fireworks. The series also includes Wizard Night, featuring a jersey auction and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, June 9, as well as Sundae Sunday Ice Cream Social on June 10. The five-game set concludes with Agriculture Night on Monday, June 11, and Summer Splash Day on Tuesday, June 12.
