PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Wahoos ninth-inning rally fell short, and Biloxi Shuckers took the series opener 6-5 Sunday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

The Wahoos got off to a hot start. Nick Longhi put the Wahoos up 1-0 in the first inning with an RBI double. He scored two batters later, on a Luis Gonzalez single to make it 2-0. C.J. McElroy made it 3-0 when he doubled home Cassidy Brown in the second.

Biloxi did their damage in the top of the sixth inning when the Wahoos led 3-0. Lucas Erceg doubled on a line drive when the Shuckers had the bases loaded, to tie the game 3-3. In the top of the seventh, Tyler Heineman hit a solo home run and Troy Stokes, Jr. hit a two-run homer to give the Shuckers the lead at 6-3.

Biloxi starter Thomas Jankins (W, 7-3) recovered after a slow start and allowed just one hit over his final five innings. Nate Griep (S, 19) made his league-best 19th save adventurous. The Blue Wahoos used doubles by Gavin LaValley, Luis Gonzalez, and Taylor Sparks to cut the deficit to one, before Cassidy Brown's fly ball was caught by center fielder Corey Ray to end the game.

Pensacola southpaw Seth Varner (L, 2-1) pitched a great game for the Wahoos. He pitched 5.1 and allowed three hits, one run, one walk, and threw six strikeouts.

Game two of the series will feature Pensacola right-hander Daniel Wright (2-3, 4.98) against Shuckers right-hander Luis Ortiz (6-3, 5.01). Coverage of Monday's game can be found on the radio at 97.1 The Ticket, 1490 AM Milton, CST, and www.bluewahoos.com. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
