Martin Comes Home to Win

Bakersfield, CA - Bakersfield native Jarret Martin gave the fans what they wanted on Thursday night, as Martin turned in a quality start and earned the win, as the Quakes snapped a three-game skid in a 5-2 victory over the Bakersfield Blaze at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

The former Centennial High School standout was in control throughout the night, allowing just two runs on four hits, while matching his season-high in strikeouts with eight, earning his third straight winning decision.

The Quakes gave Martin (3-5) some run support right out of the gate, as they staked him to an early lead. Pratt Maynard opened the scoring with a solo homer in the second inning, putting Rancho in front to stay with his second homer of the year. Scott Schebler followed with a double, then scored on a two-out double by Darnell Sweeney, as Rancho claimed a 2-0 advantage against Blaze starter Mike Dennhardt (2-4).

The Quakes tallied another run in the third to take a three-run lead, but the Blaze would finally get something going against Martin in the fourth. Dominic D'Anna brought home Juan Duran with a two-out RBI double, making it 3-1. Yovan Gonzalez followed with a run-scoring hit to make it a one-run game at 3-2. Martin settled down and got out of the inning and was never threatened again, as he retired seven of the final eight hitters he faced.

Scott Wingo doubled home Schebler in the sixth, as the Quakes took a two-run advantage at 4-2. Schebler scored his third run of the night in the eighth, as Sweeney came through with another two-out hit, this time making it 5-2 with an RBI single.

Jon-Michael Redding and Eric Eadington worked the final three innings, with Eadington retiring the side in order for a 1-2-3 inning and his first save of the year.

The Quakes (26-27) will look for their second straight win on Friday night, sending seven-game winner Duke Von Schamann (7-1) to the mound against Carlos Contreras (2-5), with first pitch at 7:30pm.

Dodgers' rehabbing shortstop Hanley Ramirez is expected to begin a rehab assignment with the Quakes on Friday night in Bakersfield.
