Giants Rally to 6-5 Win over Stockton

SAN JOSE - Chris Lofton's tiebreaking RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning propelled the San Jose Giants to a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over the Stockton Ports on Thursday evening at Municipal Stadium. Brock Bond added three RBI's while Mac Williamson hit a key two-run homer as San Jose claimed the opener of the four-game series. The win improves the Giants' overall record to 34-19 and increases their first half North Division lead to three games over the Visalia Rawhide (31-22).

Bond (2-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI), Bobby Haney (2-for-3, 2B) and John Polonius (2-for-4) finished with two hits apiece for San Jose.

The Giants overcame a 3-0 deficit taking the lead with a four-run bottom of the fifth inning. Then after Stockton moved back in front with a two-run top of the seventh, San Jose tied the game in the bottom of the frame before moving in front for good on Lofton's eighth-inning hit.

Down 3-0, the bottom of the fifth began with back-to-back walks to Shawn Payne and Lofton. After a sacrifice bunt from Haney, Bond stepped to the plate and grounded a single up the middle to plate both runners. Williamson followed with a two-run homer to straightaway center to give the Giants a 4-3 lead. The home run was Williamson's sixth of the season.

The Ports though would rally back in the top of the seventh with a pair of unearned runs against San Jose reliever Cody Hall. Bobby Crocker led off by reaching on an error committed by Haney at shortstop. After Crocker stole second and Addison Russell struck out, Max Muncy delivered an RBI single to right to tie the game. Muncy was then eventually at third base with two outs when Hall uncorked a wild pitch allowing the go-ahead run to score.

Trailing again, the Giants rallied in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Haney lined a double into the right field corner. Bond followed with a fly ball into shallow right center that eluded the diving Dusty Robinson. Bond hustled into second for a double as Haney scored to tie the game 5-5.

After Hall worked a 1-2-3 top of the eighth, the first two batters of the bottom of the inning were retired. Polonius then lined a single to center before Payne drew a walk. Lofton was up next and he lined a 3-2 pitch from Stockton reliever Jose Macias into right center field for a single. The hit scored Polonius to give San Jose back the lead at 6-5.

Josh Osich then breezed through a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to seal the Giants victory.

Hall (2-0) was credited with the win after tossing two innings of relief. Hall allowed two unearned runs on one hit with no walks and three strikeouts. Osich (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) earned his sixth save of the year.

Macias (1-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in his only inning of work.

Stockton built their initial 3-0 lead with single runs in the first, third and fifth innings. Edwin Escobar started on the mound for San Jose and pitched the first four innings. Escobar allowed two runs (both earned) on three hits. He walked one and struck out seven during his 83-pitch performance.
