(Waldorf, Md.) - Alfredo Marte blasted a tiebreaking two-run home run with two outs in the top of the eighth, as the York Revolution pulled off another dramatic comeback victory, winning 5-2 over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Saturday night in front of 4,765 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium. The first-place Revs (36-26) lower their magic number to clinch a first half title to five with the victory, with eight games remaining in the half.
Down 2-0 and having already struck out 11 times against Blue Crabs starter Daryl Thompson, York's comeback began with two outs in the top of the fifth inning. Salvador Paniagua laced a double down the right field line, and charged around third to score on Travis Witherspoon's single off the glove of third baseman Bryant Nelson, getting York on the board at 2-1.
Michael Burgess (3-for-5) crushed a home run to right-center to lead off the seventh, tying the game at 2-2 and setting the stage for another dramatic shot an inning later.
With two outs and a runner on, Marte clobbered a 3-2 pitch over the fence in left-center, giving the Revs their first lead of the night at 4-2. Brandon Chaves (3-for-5) also scored on the play after reaching on one of his three infield singles in his return to the Revs.
York added an insurance run in the ninth. Josh Wilson lined a leadoff single to left and stole second, putting himself in position to score on a throwing error by shortstop Eric Garcia on Witherspoon's infield single.
Revs starter Ty'Relle Harris (2-2) was outstanding in his second start of the season and first since May 4. The converted reliever allowed just two runs on three hits over a career-high seven innings, retiring 14 of his final 15 batters.
Manny Corpas worked a scoreless eighth, and Mike DeMark became the third in Revs history to record 20 saves in a season with a scoreless ninth, retiring Jon Dziomba on a groundout to second, stranding two in scoring position.
Southern Maryland opened the scoring in the third on Harris' only hiccup of the evening. After a pair of leadoff walks, D'Arby Myers sacrificed both runners over, and Kuan-Jen Chen drove in the first run of the game with an infield single. Nelson then dragged a squeeze bunt to second, plating another run to make it 2-0.
Thompson dominated early, not allowing a hit until the fourth and striking out 11 of his first 14 outs. Thompson finished with two runs allowed over seven innings, walking one and striking out 13. The 13 strikeouts tied a record for an opposing starter against the Revs.
Reliever Brian Grening (3-2) suffered the loss for Southern Maryland, allowing Marte's two-run homer in the eighth.
York out-hit Southern Maryland 12-5, and won despite striking out 16 times, a team-record for a nine-inning game.
