PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves have announced their Farm Bureau Player & Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Sunday, July 1. Mississippi Braves shortstop, Luis Marte and right-handed pitcher, Touki Toussaint have been selected for the weekly awards.
Marte, the 24-year old shortstop, was named the Mississippi Farm Bureau Player of the Week after recording a .389 batting average (7-for-18) accompanied by four runs scored, one double, two home runs, four runs batted in and one walk. Over the course of 31 games played with the Mississippi Braves in 2018, Marte has amassed nine runs scored, four doubles, one triple, two home runs, 15 runs batted in, 43 total bases, six walks and two stolen bases.
On the season, Marte is sporting a .301 batting average (31-for-103) along with a .345 on-base percentage, a .417 slugging percentage, and a .763 on-base plus slugging percentage. A native of San Francisco de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Marte was signed by the Atlanta Braves on May 23, 2018 as a minor-league free agent and assigned to Double-A Mississippi after being released by the Texas Rangers on May 18, 2018. Marte was originally signed by the Texas Rangers as an international free agent on November 4, 2010.
Toussaint, the 22-year old right-handed pitcher, finished the week with a 0-0 record and a 0.00 ERA. In his lone start of the week, Toussaint allowed two hits, issued three walks and struck out 11, in 7.0 innings pitched and did not allow a run. Toussaint's 11 strikeouts recorded on June 30 against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos match his career-high for the amount of strikeouts recorded in a single game. After recording 11 strikeouts on Saturday, Toussaint becomes the first M-Braves pitcher to reach 100 strikeouts on the season. The Atlanta Braves No. 11 overall prospect currently leads both the Southern League and class Double-A with 107 strikeouts. Toussaint's 107 strikeouts rank fourth in all of Minor League Baseball.
On the season, Toussaint has tallied a win-loss record of 4-6 and a 2.93 ERA. In 16 starts with the M-Braves in 2018, Toussaint has allowed 66 hits, 36 runs, 28 earned runs, seven home runs, and has issued 36 walks in 86.0 innings pitched. A native of Coral Springs, Florida, Toussaint was acquired by the Atlanta Braves along with RHP Bronson Arroyo from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for INF Phil Gosselin on June 20, 2015. Toussaint was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round (16th overall) of the 2014 June free agent draft.
The Mississippi Braves are the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Since the inaugural 2005 season, over 125 M-Braves have gone on to Major League Baseball.
