Marlins Jump the Sharks, Sweep Doubleheader

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins (25-29 overall, 15-12 second half) swept a doubleheader from the Wilmington Sharks (29-23 overall, 13-12 second half) by scores of 2-1 and 8-3 for their 10th and 11th straight wins Wednesday evening at Big Rock Stadium.

In game one, Corey Bass lined a walk-off double down the right field line with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to score Sam Ott and lift the Marlins to a 2-1 victory.

The Marlins scored the first run in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI-double from Sal Annunziata for a 1-0 lead. The score held until the top of the eighth frame when Wilmington plated an unearned run to tie the game which set the stage for the Marlins walk-off win.

Evan Zerff (1-3) notched the win in game one, tossing two innings and allowing one unearned run after Dario Santangelo pitched seven shutout frames. Wes Hatley (6-2) took the loss after allowing a run in the ninth.

In game two Wilmington jumped out to a three-run lead, scoring one in the first inning and two more in the top of the third. From there the Marlins scored eight unanswered en route to victory. In the bottom of the third the Fish plated two unearned runs to cut the deficit to 3-2. Then they tied it in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Sal Annunziata.

In the fifth the Marlins jumped ahead for good when Dalton Knight scored on a wild pitch and Reed Gordy scored when Ott reached on an error. Bass followed up with a double that scored Ott and gave the Marlins a 7-3 lead. Morehead City tacked on one more run in the sixth on a groundout that scored Geoff DeGroot from third.

Steve Landell (2-3) picked up the victory in his first relief appearance of the season, tossing four innings of shutout ball in relief of Matt Wainman. Aaron Hoover suffered the loss. Sean Pope (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs in the fifth.

The Marlins are home tomorrow when they take on the Wilson Tobs. It's Thirsty Thursday presented by Miller Lite and Host Family and Fan Appreciation Night . First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. as Matt Sutor has the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.

Notes: The Marlins walk-off win in game one was their fourth of the season and second this week... The 11 game winning streak is the longest in the CPL this season... The Marlins have outscored their opponents 58-23 during the win streak... The Fish finished the season series 4-8 against the Sharks.
