Forest City Owls News Release

Columbia, SC- The Forest City Owls powered their way to a doubleheader sweep of the Columbia Blowfish on Wednesday night. The Owls took the first game 3-2 on Gunnar Heidt's first home run of the year. In the second game, Alex Close smacked a two-run homer and had 4 RBI, leading Forest City to a 6-2 victory. The wins mean that the Owls have clinched the overall Western Division title for the 2012 season. It also means that Forest City will be no worse than a #3 seed when the Petitt Cup Playoffs start on Saturday.

Heidt took Tucker Ward deep to left field to break a 2-2 tie in the 5th inning of Game 1. Hunter Privette came on for the final two innings. The South Carolina product gave up a couple of base hits, but held the lead to earn his first save of the year. Nate Cudney picked up the win despite allowing both Columbia runs. Kurt Seiders had a two-run double early in the game to put the Owls in front 2-0.

Close kicked off Game 2 with a bang. The first baseman launched a two-run homer over the batter's eye in centerfield to put Forest City up 2-0 in the 1st inning. Tre-von Johnson countered with a two-run blast off of Carson Herndon in the 2nd inning to tie the game. The Owls opened it back up in the 3rd inning with three straight doubles by Nate Chong, Close and Will Chandler, producing four runs for a 6-2 lead.

Four different Forest City relievers closed out the Game 2 win. Luis Paula pitched a scoreless 5th inning for his 4th win of the season. Champ Rowland, Jason Driver and Jake Padgett also delivered a scoreless frame each.
