Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

FORT WORTH, Texas. - After a great July, the Shreveport-Bossier Captains have struggled off the bat in August, but looked to veteran righthander Thad Markray for a boost in his first start since July 6 on Thursday night. Unfortunately for Markray and the Captains, he was knocked out in the fifth inning, and the Fort Worth Cats rolled 9-3 to another easy victory to complete a three-game sweep at LaGrave Field.

Coupled with Pensacola's victory over Grand Prairie, the Captains (37-37, 15-11 2nd half) fell out of first place in the South Division second half standings by a game with their seventh loss in their last eight games.

Markray (3-8) began the game matching zeroes with fellow righty Lee Gwaltney (5-0), as he retired the first seven batters he faced. But Gwaltney, in his return from the Mexican League, was even better, allowing one baserunner in each of the second, third and fourth innings. Markray blinked first in the fourth, as Michael Bell walked with one out, and Kelley Gulledge brought him in with an RBI double into the leftfield corner on an 0-2 pitch.

Isa Garcia followed with another RBI double to give Fort Worth (43-31, 12-14) a 2-0 lead, and the Cats added to it in the fifth. Brian Fryer led off with a double, and after a walk to Cameron Blair, Ryan Patterson had the first of his three hits with a double to bring both runners in to make it 4-0. After a flyout moved Patterson to third, Derrick Miramontes relieved Markray and allowed an RBI single to Michael Bell to give the Cats a 5-0 lead.

In total, Markray was charged with five runs on six hits, with a walk and two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. The Captains got two back in the sixth off Gwaltney on a sacrifice fly by Christopher Garcia and a double by Andres Rodriguez, but never got any closer than that.

Gwaltney went six, before Ryan Trytten came on to pitch two perfect innings with four strikeouts. Rookie Matt Gibbs then finished it off for the Cats, allowing one run on an RBI single by Selwyn Langaigne.

Notes: A Captains starter has not pitched seven innings or more since Jimmy Heard in El Paso on July 27, a streak of eight straight games...The first eight Cats in the order all had at least one hit for the second night in a row...Fort Worth outscored Shreveport-Bossier 32-8 in the series, scoring in 14 of their 24 innings. The Captains scored in six of 27 innings in the three games.

The Shreveport-Bossier Captains return home for a six-game homestand, starting on Friday, August 7 against the Grand Prairie AirHogs at 7:05 p.m., with a 1st Choice Personnel Team Photo Giveaway. All games are broadcast on ESPN Radio, KRMD-1340 AM and streamed live on supertalk1340.com, with streaming video provided by NiftyTV on www.sbcaptains.com for all home games and select road games.
