Marianne Stanley Returns to Mystics Bench

WASHINGTON, D.C. -Washington Mystics General Manager and Head Coach Trudi Lacey announced that assistant coach Marianne Stanley will return to the bench for the 2011 season. A pioneer in women's basketball, Stanley was recently inducted in the Philadelphia Sports Hall of fame.

"I am happy that Marianne will rejoin us for the 2011 season. I have long admired her knowledge of the game and I enjoyed working with her this past season. I look forward to having her with our team on this incredible journey as we prepare for many future successes," stated Lacey.

As a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, Stanley brings a wealth of experience to the Mystics. She has had extensive coaching experience at the collegiate level with stops at Stanford, University of California-Berkeley and University of Southern California. Stanley assisted C. Vivian Stringer during Rutgers University's run to the NCAA Championship game. In 2007. She is also very familiar with the WNBA and coached the Mystics for two seasons. In addition, she has also been an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Sparks and the New York Liberty.

Stanley has earned numerous accolades throughout her career. She was named the Pac-10 Conference Coach of the Year in 1993, the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year in 1984 and 1985, and an All-American selection as a player in 1975 and 1976 at Immaculata College. In 2002, she was voted the WNBA Coach of the Year. That same year she was also inducted in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. Stanley is currently an assistant coach with UMMC Ekaterinberg which features the Mystics' own Crystal Langhorne and WNBA players Cappie Pondexter and Sandrine Gruda.

In 2010, the Washington Mystics won the Eastern Conference's regular season and secured the top seed for the playoffs in the East.
