Margevicius Shines, But TinCaps See Season Opener Slip Away
April 5, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Eastlake, Ohio - In his TinCaps debut, starting pitcher Nick Margevicius shined on Opening Day, but the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians) scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win in walk-off fashion at Classic Park on a cold Thursday night, 3-2.
Margevicius' marvelous performance came in front of dozens of family members and friends. The nearby Cleveland native allowed only one hit while striking out nine through 5 2/3 innings. In fact, Margevicius, a lefty who the Padres selected in the seventh round of last year's MLB Draft, didn't allow a hit or a walk through 5 2/3 innings before exiting after yielding a single. He thrived on a night with temperatures in the 30s.
Meanwhile, Fort Wayne (0-1) took a lead in the top of the fourth inning. Captains second baseman Jorma Rodriguez committed one of seven errors in the game (four committed by Lake County) with a wild throw to first base that enabled TinCaps center fielder Jeisson Rosario to score from second. Rosario was on base after leading the inning off with his second of two singles in the game.
Later, the TinCaps added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. With third baseman Justin Lopez batting, James Karinchak threw a wild pitch, scoring right fielder Tirso Ornelas from third to give Fort Wayne a 2-0 lead. Ornelas had started the frame with a walk.
Lake County (1-0), however, came back in the bottom of the ninth-aided by four walks, an intentional walk, a wild pitch, and eventually a game-winning single with the bases loaded by Rodriguez to break a 2-2 tie.
In the losing cause, Lopez, 17, the youngest player in the Midwest League, also had a two-hit game for the TinCaps.
