Bradenton Marauders News Release
LAKELAND, Fla. - The Marauders shut out the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 3-0, in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader before dropping the nightcap, 2-1, at Publix Field.
The twinbill split guarantees that, for the fifth straight series, the Marauders (22-28) will not be able to obtain a series win. Bradenton will look to salvage a split in Sunday's finale.
The first game of the doubleheader saw Po-Yu Chen (1-4) toss five scoreless innings for Bradenton, holding the Flying Tigers (24-26) to just two hits and one walk while striking out seven. Left-hander Joe Jacques, on minor league rehab assignment, pitched two scoreless innings in relief, earning the save.
Bradenton's three runs of offense each came on RBI-singles. Luke Brown knocked a run-scoring single to left field in the second inning for the game's first run, and Jase Bowen added RBI-singles in the fifth and seventh innings to stretch the Marauders' lead.
Lakeland starter Jackson Jobe (0-1) took the loss, allowing Brown's RBI-single in the second before escaping a bases-loaded jam with no further damage.
The Flying Tigers placed just two runners into scoring position and went just 0-for-6 with men in scoring position.
In the second game, Lakeland jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out infield single by Austin Schultz, who narrowly beat third baseman Brenden Dixon's throw to first base, allowing Mike Rothenberg to score from third.
After managing just one baserunner in their first three innings at the plate, the Marauders tied the score, 1-1, in the fourth on a Grant Koch RBI-single to center. But Flying Tigers starter Brant Hurter (3-2) proved difficult to solve, striking out seven and limiting the Marauders to five hits.
In the fifth, the Marauders placed runners on second and third via a single, a fielding error, and a double-steal by Randy Romero and Mike Jarvis, but Rodolfo Nolasco struck out to end the threat.
Marauders starter Carlos Jimenez (1-4) pitched five respectable innings and retired 10 of his final 12 batters faced, but allowed a decisive, go-ahead solo homer to Carlos Mendoza in the bottom of the fifth.
Bradenton was unable to bring home Koch in the sixth after he lined a one-out single, and in the seventh, reliever RJ Petit retired the side in order, ending the game.
The series concludes Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. at Publix Field. RHP Justin Meis (3-4, 3.50 ERA) will start for the Marauders against LHP Carlos Pena (3-1, 3.21 ERA) for Lakeland.
