Bradenton Marauders News Release
BRADENTON, Fla. - The Marauders fought back from a two-run deficit Wednesday night but saw Clearwater jump back ahead in the ninth on a 4-2 loss on Wednesday night at LECOM Park.
The loss drops the Marauders (23-30) to a season-low seven games under .500.
Pitching the top of the ninth inning with the score tied, 2-2, Dante Mendoza (4-2) struck out the Threshers' Kendall Simmons to begin the frame before issuing a one-out walk to Marcus Lee Sang. Mendoza recovered to strike out Andrick Nava for the second out, and Leandro Pineda took an intentional ball four, as the Marauders elected to face Micah Yonamine, who was 0-for-3 in the game at the time. But on a 1-2 count, Yonamine lined a ball to right field that Luke Brown was unable to catch on a diving attempt, resulting in a go-ahead two-run double.
Three Marauders hitters went down on strikes in the bottom of the ninth against right-hander Tommy McCollum (1-0), ending the game.
Bradenton right-hander Joelvis del Rosario and Threshers (28-24) lefty Gabriel Cotto dueled on the mound, with each hurler tossing three scoreless innings to begin the night. Clearwater took the lead in the fourth when Simmons hit a deep drive to left field that narrowly cleared the wall for a solo homer. Lee Sang following with a single and scored on a double by Nava, putting the Threshers in a 2-0 advantage.
The Marauders, who had not placed a runner into scoring position in their first four innings, pushed back in the fifth. Norkis Marcos lined a one-out triple to left-center and scored on a bloop single to right field by Mike Jarvis to cut Bradenton's deficit to one run. The fifth inning would be Cotto's last on the mound, and the southpaw finished with seven strikeouts and just four hits allowed.
In the sixth, the Marauders tied the score. Jase Bowen drew a walk from reliever Malik Binns, then stole both second and third base before scoring on a single to left-center by Wyatt Hendrie.
Bradenton would manage just one baserunner over their final three innings, however, as Bowen doubled to left field with two out in the eighth to place the go-ahead run into scoring position, but was stranded when McCollum entered and struck out Sergio Campana.
Although he received insufficient run support, Del Rosario turned in his second straight quality start for the Marauders, striking out five and scattering six hits over six innings. Left fielder Randy Romero helped him through a scoreless sixth inning by throwing out Simmons at second base as he attempted to stretch a leadoff single into a double.
Left-hander Denny Roman tossed two innings of scoreless relief for Bradenton, partially aided by Hendrie catching Leandro Pineda on an attempted steal of third base after a leadoff double in the seventh.
The series continues Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at LECOM Park. Both teams have yet to announce their starting pitchers.
