Clearwater Threshers News Release
BRADENTON, Fl - The Clearwater Threshers used a two-run, two out double from first baseman Micah Yonamine in the top of the ninth to squeeze by the Bradenton Marauders 4-2 for a second straight game on Wednesday night at LECOM Park.
Left-hander Gabriel Cotto made his ninth start of the season for Clearwater on the mound, allowing only one run on four hits and striking out seven in five innings of work.
The Threshers (28-24) opened the scoring in the fourth, using a solo home run by Kendall Simmons (5) and an RBI double by newcomer Andrick Nava to grab a 2-0 lead.
After the Marauders (23-30) scratched across a run in the fifth and another in the sixth off right-hander Malik Binns to tie it 2-2, the Threshers rallied late for a second consecutive night. In the ninth, Marcus Lee Sang drew a one out walk and Leandro Pineda was intentionally walked with two outs, before Yonamine came through again with a two-run double into right field to give the visitors a 4-2 advantage.
Righty Tommy McCollum, celebrating his 23rd birthday, tossed two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth. McCollum struck out the side in the final frame and was credited with his first win of the season.
Clearwater will look to make it three victories in a row in game three of the six-game set on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with coverage on the Threshers Broadcasting Network set for 6:20 p.m.
