Cape Breton Eagles News Release
SAINT JOHN - 4-0 was the magic score for the Screaming Eagles on Wednesday night in Saint John. It's the team's record at Harbour Station after its final visit this season, and it was the score of the game as Kevin Mandolese recorded his first career shutout against the Sea Dogs.
Both teams were shutout in a pedestrian opening frame that saw the Dogs outshoot the Eagles 7-6. Each club had one power play opportunity in the opening period but failed to score.
The Eagles would open things up in the second stanza, with the opening goal coming on the man advantage. Brooklyn Kalmikov would cash in on the power play at the 5:30 mark to put the visitors up 1-0. Before the end of the period Phélix Martineau would hammer home a shot from the top of the circle to double the lead. Cape Breton would outshoot Saint John 16-1 as the Eagles dominated period two. Saint John's best chance would not be on goal, as Robbie Burt put the puck over the net on the breakaway.
Early in the third period the Eagles would pull away further on a three way passing play. Mathias Laferriere would gain the zone, find Isiah Campbell who would move the puck back to Laferriere. Shaun Miller was the recipient of a tic tac toe play and slammed the puck into the open side of the goal to make it 3-0.
Ross MacDougall would complete the scoring at the 13:38 mark of the third period. He fired it from the top of the right circle, just under the crossbar and over Alex D'Orio.
Saint John pushed hard to break the goose egg, getting some of their best chances in the late stages. One such opportunity from Cédric Paré rolled on the goal line before it was cleared away by Noah Laaouan. The Sea Dogs couldn't solve Mandolese though and he would collect the shutout.
Mandolese stopped all 17 Saint John shots in the win. D'Orio stopped 32 of 36 shots in the loss.
The Screaming Eagles will now return home for a three game home stand, beginning with Saturday's game against the Moncton Wildcats. Puck drop is 7 PM. Tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp
