St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees limited the St. Lucie Mets to just one run for the third time in four games as they defeated the Mets 3-1 on Friday at Tradition Field.
The slumping Mets, who have lost four of five and have scored just one run in each of those four losses, had no answer for Austin Ross. The Manatees starter gave up just four hits and one run in seven strong innings.
The lone run for the Mets came on a sac fly in the seventh off the bat of Eudy Pina. It was set up by Gilbert Gomez's walk and a double from Cole Frenzel.
The Manatees scored all the runs they needed in the fifth. With two outs, Cameron Garfield belted a pitch from Matt Koch to the gap in left field that scored two and made it 2-0.
Both runs were unearned, as Jairo Perez made and error at third that started the frame.
After throwing 88 pitches through five innings, Koch came out to start the sixth. He gave up back-to-back singles to Yadiel Rivera and Mike Garza to put runners at first and third. Koch got Jose Sermo to ground into a double play, but Rivera scored to make it 3-0.
That was enough for Ross, who improved to 4-0, and two Brevard County relievers. Former Boston Red Sox Jose De La Torre struck out the side in the eighth. Mark Williams pitched around a two out error in the ninth by striking out Pina to end the ball game. It was the first save for Williams.
The Manatees pounded out 10 hits. Three came from Garza, the No. 8 hitter.
The Mets could only muster five hits.
Brevard County took three out of four from the Mets, who fell to second place in the Florida State League South Division by 0.5 games after Fort Myers defeated Clearwater. Only 16 games remain in the first half.
The Mets (31-23) will try to rebound against Daytona on Saturday as the Cubs come to Tradition Field to start a four-game series. Following the action on the field, a fireworks show will light up the Treasure Coast sky. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
