Brevard's Pitching Baffles St. Lucie Again in 3-1 Win
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -For the second straight night, the Brevard County Manatees rallied behind a terrific starting pitching performance asAustin Rossshut down the St. Lucie Mets, en route to a 3-1 win at Tradition Field on Friday night.
Ross (4-0, 2.95 ERA), who moved from the bullpen to the rotation after Jed Bradley was called up to Double-A Huntsville, held the Mets scoreless through his first six innings. The starter allowed his only run in the seventh and final inning of work, while scattering four hits. Ross struck out four and walked three.
Brevard County's offense had plenty of opportunities to break through against the Mets early, but did not capitalize until the fifth.Nathan Orfreached first on an error to leadoff the inning and then with one out,Tyrone Taylorsingled to center.
With two outs in the inning,Cameron Garfieldhit a fly ball into the left-center field gap that allowed both Orf and Taylor to score as Garfield cruised into second with a clutch double to give the 'Tees a 2-0 lead.
The Manatees (28-25) added another run in the sixth inning.Yadiel RiveraandMike Garzadelivered back-to-back singles to start the frame, with Rivera going to third on Garza's single. That allowed Rivera to score and make it 3-0, when Jose Sermo grounded into a double play.
Both Rivera and Garza had multi-hit nights for Brevard as Rivera had two singles and Garza had three hits - including a double - for the second straight night against the Mets (31-23).
Following Ross's seven one-run innings,Jose De La Torremade his Brevard County debut in the eighth and gave up one hit, but proceeded to strike out the side.
Mark Williamsthen picked up his first save of the year with a scoreless ninth. He allowed one batter to reach with two outs, but ended the game with a strikeout to seal the victory.
The Manatees took three games from the Mets to win the four-game series. Brevard County's road trip will continue as they head to Port Charlotte to open up a four-game set with the Charlotte Stone Crabs (25-27). The series opener is set for Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
