August 2, 2014 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE "" Sean Manaea dazzled across 7.1 shutout frames on Saturday, leading the Blue Rocks to a 6-0 victory over the Frederick Keys at Frawley Stadium. It was Wilmington's Carolina League-leading 13th shutout win of the season. The Blue Rocks now sit at 20-20 in the second half and at 53-55 overall.
Manaea's outing was the longest of the season by a Blue Rocks starter. He gave up just four hits, walked one and struck out seven. Manaea's lone free pass did not come until the final hitter he faced in the top of the eighth inning. He threw 91 pitches on the evening, 60 of them for strikes.
The southpaw also got plenty of help from Wilmington's offense.
The Blue Rocks exploded for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, turning a 2-0 Blue Crew lead into a 6-0 advantage. The rally began with one out in the frame, when Jared Schlehuber was hit in the helmet. Schlehuber was replaced by pinch runner Ramon Torres, who promptly stole both second and third. Daniel Rockett and Terrance Gore then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Jack Lopez, who bounced a two-RBI single to center.
Lopez and Gore continued the offensive onslaught on the basepaths, executing a perfect double steal to leave runners at second and third for Raul Mondesi. The young shortstop lifted a sacrifice fly to center, sending Gore plateward and Lopez to third. Bubba Starling plated the final tally of the frame with an RBI double into the left-field corner.
Wilmington first cracked the scoreboard in the second inning, when Jared Schlehuber hooked an RBI double down the line in left. Cam Gallagher set up Schlehuber's clutch knock by drawing a two-out walk. He was able to motor all the way home from first on Schlehuber's two-bagger.
Zane Evans' third home run of the year, a solo shot to left in the fourth inning, extended the Blue Crew lead to 2-0.
Manaea (4-7, 3.61) earned his fourth victory of the year for Wilmington. Sebastian Vader (1-4, 7.13) suffered his fourth defeat of the campaign for Frederick.
The Rocks return to action on Sunday at Frawley Stadium for the rubber match of their three-game series against the Keys. Right-hander Glenn Sparkman (6-2, 1.44) will take the mound for Wilmington while Frederick will counter with fellow righty Mark Blackmar (6-1, 3.55). First pitch is slated for 5:05 p.m. and fans can listen to the broadcast on 89.7 WGLS-FM. For tickets, call 302-888-BLUE.
