DENVER - Matt Brown made the most of his opportunity to play for the first time in six weeks and Gavin Prout set the team assists record as the Colorado Mammoth outlasted the Portland LumberJax 15-12 on Thursday night.

Brown, a healthy scratch since being held scoreless in the Dec. 29 season opener, tallied three goals and three assists to help the Mammoth improve to 5-0, the National Lacrosse League's best record.

Prout became the first player in Mammoth history to register eight assists in one game and raised his league-leading total to 28.

The Mammoth delighted the crowd of 15,910 at Pepsi Center as it improved to 4-0 at home this season and 35-9 all-time in Denver. The LumberJax fell to 1-4 and remain in last place in the West Division.

"It was an up-and-down game, but we stayed focused and got the job done," Mammoth coach Bob McMahon said. "Portland made some runs in the second half and I was proud of the way our guys responded."

Portland scored four consecutive goals in the third quarter, slashing the Mammoth's lead to 11-9 and prompting McMahon to pull goaltender Chris Levis, who had made 24 saves on 33 shots.

The team responded immediately, as Jed Prossner and Jason Bloom both scored their second goals of the game to boost the lead back to four. Brown's third goal of the game extended the Mammoth's advantage to 14-9.

Gee Nash played well in relief of Levis, allowing just three goals on 18 shots and earning his fourth victory of the season. Matt King took the loss in goal for the LumberJax after making 18 saves on 32 shots. Dallas Eliuk replaced King in the second half and stopped all but one of the 18 shots he faced.

Seven different players scored for the Mammoth as the team tallied a season-high 15 goals. Ryan Powell led Portland with four goals and Spencer Martin had a team-high six points on one goal and five assists.

After Derek Malawsky scored in the second quarter to pull the Jax within three, the Mammoth answered with goals by Prossner and Jamie Shewchuk to extend the lead to 10-5 at halftime.

With Brian Langtry out of the lineup with a broken finger, Brown capitalized on his chance to play by scoring back-to-back goals in the second quarter to give the Mammoth an 8-4 lead.

Jason Wulder set the pace of the high-scoring first quarter with three goals and Dan Carey added two, staking the Mammoth to a 5-4 lead.
