Mamie Peanut Johnson To Be Honored At Campanelli Stadium July 30

(Brockton, MA – July 25, 2003) The Brockton Rox are holding a salute to Negro Leagues Night on Wednesday, July 30, in which both teams will be wearing throwback jerseys. The first and only professional female baseball pitcher in history will be on-hand to throw out the first pitch. Pitching is nothing new to Mamie ‘Peanut' Johnson, who amassed a 33-8 career record while part of the Indianapolis Clowns. The 5'2" 100-pound Johnson was known to get her fastball up to 85 MPH. There were two other females playing at that time, second baseman Tony Stone and Connie Morgan. The nickname ‘Peanut' was acquired as an opposing player claimed that she was not as big as a peanut to strike out anyone. Johnson then struck him out and the nickname stuck. Not all of the players were opposed to a female playing against them. Leroy ‘Satchel' Paige actually took the time to help ‘Peanut' perfect her curveball so she would not throw out her arm. Career Home Run Leader Hank Aaron was a teammate of hers on the Clowns for a brief time. Prior to her career in baseball, ‘Peanut' studied engineering and medicine at New York University. Johnson is a member of the Negro League, African American Ethnic Sports and Gloria Herndon Negro League Hall's of Fame. On April 30, she threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park. Today, she runs the Negro Leagues Baseball Shops in Bowie, MD., which specializes in memorabilia honoring Negro League Stars. The Brockton Rox play their home games in the city of Brockton's new, state-of-the-art baseball facility, Campanelli Stadium adjacent to the Shaw $B!G (Js Center, a meeting and banquet facility. The club plays a 92-game schedule in the eight-team independent Northeast League.
