Mallards Win Close Game to Split Series in Green Bay
August 1, 2021 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
After losing in a shootout to the tune of 15-7 in yesterday's game, the Madison Mallards split the series on the road vs. the Green Bay Booyah with a 3-2 victory in what was a pitcher's duel for a majority of the game.
Mallards' starting pitcher Justin Medlin (4-0, 1.42 ERA) had a stellar afternoon on the mound; going 7 innings, giving up just 4 hits, zero runs and racking up 10 strikeouts. 7 innings was his longest outing of the season to date. He adds to his impressive season with a 4-0 record including a similar performance vs. Lakeshore on July 17th going 6 innings, allowing zero runs and totaling 8 strikeouts.
There was no score by either team until the 6th inning where the Mallards tacked on a pair of home runs; a solo shot by Joe Hauser, his first of the season, and a JT Benson 2-run home run three batters later, scoring Drake Baldwin, to make it a 3-0 Mallards lead. Booyah starting pitcher Mykel Page left the game after completing the inning, going 6 IP and allowing 3 ER, all in the 6th inning.
The Booyah bats made the game interesting in the 8th inning, with runs scoring from a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to cut the Mallards' lead to 3-2. Mallard's reliever/closer Jared Fong (2-2, 3.10 ERA) pitched the final two innings of the game, giving up those two runs but eventually sealing the deal in the 9th inning to keep the score how it was and ensuring a Mallards' victory.
Today's gutsy Mallards' road victory gives them a record of 13-11, 3.5 games behind the top of the Great Lakes West division with a home-heavy final two weeks on the regular season. The Mallards return to Madison tomorrow night vs. Lakeshore, first pitch starting at 6:35pm.
