Mallards Welcome Back Laporte, Nevins

MOLINE, Ill. - Forwards Nolan LaPorte and Jack Nevins have returned to the Quad City Mallards after being released from professional tryout agreements by the American Hockey League's Iowa Wild and the Mallards have released emergency backup goaltender Jake Reed, the Mallards announced today.

LaPorte, a 24-year old rookie, made his AHL debut last Saturday in a 2-1 Iowa victory over the Rockford IceHogs after signing a PTO with the Wild last Thursday. The 6-foot, 192-pound Mokena, Illinois, native has scored 11 goals and picked up 24 assists for 35 points in 50 games with the Mallards this season. LaPorte ranks second on the team in plus/minus rating (plus-19). He joined the Mallards after skating in National Hockey League training camp with the Washington Capitals on a tryout agreement.

LaPorte scored eight goals and added nine assists for 17 points in 31 games as a senior at Western Michigan University last season. LaPorte scored 33 goals and collected 37 assists to total 70 points in 133 career collegiate games. He served as a Western Michigan co-captain as a junior while his most productive season as a Bronco was his sophomore campaign, during which he produced 11 goals, 13 assists and 24 points in 40 games.

LaPorte spent two seasons with the United States Hockey League's Green Bay Gamblers before making the move to WMU. He finished fourth in the USHL in points (70) in 2011-12 while helping Green Bay to the league title.

Nevins, 23, also played in Iowa's victory last Saturday after signing a PTO with the Wild last Thursday. In 49 games with the Mallards, the 6-foot-1, 207-pound Stittsville, Ontario, native has set career highs with nine goals, 11 assists and 20 points this season. Nevins leads the Mallards will 111 penalty minutes.

Nevins spent his first two campaigns in the AHL before joining the Mallards this season. He scored four times and registered 101 penalty minutes in 59 games with the Rochester Americans last year. In 2014-15, Nevins split his first full season between the Americans and the Hamilton Bulldogs after breaking into the pro ranks by playing three games with the Bulldogs at the end of the 2013-14 campaign. In 107 career AHL games, Nevins has notched four goals and one assist and piled up 214 penalty minutes.

Nevins played three seasons of junior hockey before turning pro, seeing action for the Sarnia Sting, Kingston Frontenacs and London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League and the Prince Edward Island Rocket/Charlottetown Islanders and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Reed, 22, last Thursday joined the Mallards as an emergency backup for the fourth time this season and for the sixth time in the last three campaigns. The 6-foot-2-inch, 190-pound Coal Valley native also acted as emergency backup for the Cincinnati Cyclones last month after suiting for both the Cyclones and Wheeling Nailers on an emergency basis last season.

The Mallards return to action on the road Friday night against the Nailers. The Mallards next play on home ice Wednesday night, March 15, against the Kalamazoo Wings. That game and all Mallards Wednesday night home games face off at the special early start time of 6:35 p.m.
