Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, WI - The Mallards were able to salvage one game in the doubleheader with Fond du Lac on Thursday, losing game one 15-2 and winning the second 12-2.
Game one of the doubleheader got off to a rough start immediately for the Mallards as the home team committed two costly errors in the 1st inning; one by Josh Caron and another by starting pitcher Justin Miller (L, 1-1). The Ducks were able to scratch two runs back in the bottom of the 2nd on a couple singles and a walk. The first Mallards run of the game was driven in by Jack Merrifield (2-4, RBI) on an opposite field single to score Caron. Jaxson Crull drove in J.T. Mabry to score the Ducks final run of the day. Madison, playing from behind the entire contest, was unable to get any movement around the basepaths. The Mallards left five on base with only four hits and two walks under their belt in the sizable loss. The 4th inning was the fall apart inning for the Ducks. Twelve Dock Spiders' come to the plate against both Miller and reliever Ethan Osborne in the lengthy inning. The first eight batters in the inning found their way on base and the carousel was well under way. Fond du Lac plates eight runs in the inning, completely blowing the contest open and leaving the Mallards in the dust. Tommy Ellisen was the most impressive Mallards' pitcher in game one as the Connecticut University product strikes out four in two innings of work to close out the game.
Game two was much more fun for the 6,000+ in attendance at Warner Park in the nightcap. It all got started off with Kade Lancour (W, 1-0) on the mound. Lancour (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) only ran into trouble in the 2nd inning when Fond du Lac scored two on a couple of errors. The Ducks committed seven total errors in the two games with shortstop Javier Beal committing all five errors in game two. The Mallards offense had Beal's back immediately after the top of the inning. Madison scores 12 unanswered runs to jump all over the Dock Spiders to split the doubleheader. Johnny Long and Scott Shaw both singled to give the Mallards a 3-2 lead and the Ducks never looked back. Madison smacked four doubles in the bottom of the 6th in a four run frame, then the power came. Liam Moreno hits his first home run of the year with a three-run moonshot to left. Josh Caron followed Moreno's 7th inning bomb with a two-run missile to left field as well. Steven Lacey and Bryce Woody only allow one base runner to reach base in their four innings of relief work on something other than errors.
The Mallards are slated for a home-and-home date with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters with game one taking plate at Warner Park at 6:35 PM on Friday night. The game is free to watch and is available under the Live Action tab on the Northwoods League website.
