Moline, IL- Rookies Mike Kompon and Justin Brown scored early in the first period as the Mallards beat the Elmira Jackals 4-2 in the teams' only meeting of the season. Brown recorded a goal and two assists in the game to capture first star honors for the first time this season. With the win, the Mallards are unbeaten (3-0-2) in their last five including two consecutive victories. The team concludes a four-game home stand with a 3-0-1 record. On the season, the Mallards are now 16-15-6.
Kompon started the Mallards scoring with his 12th goal of the season at 4:14 of the first. Brown added a rebound goal at 8:02 of the period to stake the Mallards to a 2-0 lead. Elmira's Jamie Thompon scored on a breakaway with 38 seconds left in the period to cut the Mallards lead in half before the first period ended.
In the second, Patrick Nadeau scored for the second consecutive night to extend the Mallards lead to 3-1. Nadeau has scored four goals in the last six games for Quad City.
Darren Van Oene scored for Elmira with 14:51 left in the period. Following Van Oene's marker, the Jackals mounted a third period charge but failed to even the score. Mallards goaltender Robert Gherson turned aside 13 shots in the final period to secure his sixth win of the year and his second in the last two nights. Jason Deskins scored into an empty net with 12 seconds left to secure the Mallards victory at 4-2.
The 4,187 Quad City fans in attendance witnessed an entertaining contest as the teams combined for 74 shots on goal. Chicago Blackhawks organist Frank Pellico entertained fans throughout the night with old-time hockey organ music. Pellico returns to The MARK on February 19th.
The Mallards are on the road on Monday for a game vs. the Kalamazoo Wings. Game time is 6:00 p.m. central time with the First Capital Financial Pre-Game Show beginning at 5:35 p.m. After the game, stay tuned for the Allstate Insurance Del Newton/Christy Cox Post-Game Show. Due to the Mallards game, Duck Talk will not be heard this week.
