Rockford IceHogs News Release

Rockford, Ill.-The Quad City Mallards relished putting a damper on the Rockford IceHogs party. In what is always one of the most anticipated nights of the year, the 7th-Annual IceHogs Charity Jersey Auction, Quad City topped Rockford 2-1 in shootout in front of 4,262 Friday night at the Rockford MetroCentre.

In a clash of great goaltending, Rockford goalie Ronnie Vogel and Mallards goaltender Jason Tapp played a game of who will blink fist. Both players used the first period to demonstrate that they came to play, each shutting out the other side through the first frame. The second period provided a little more offense, but not much. Vogel was the one who blinked first letting a wrist shot from Quad City forward Jeff Petruic beat him at the 4:27 mark. The Hogs finally snuck one past Tapp at 10:34 of the same frame when three Hogs rookies got into the act, defenseman Matt Gens notched the goal and wingers Chaz Johnson and Yannick Tifu aided with the helpers.

That's the way it stayed through the rest of regulation as both goalies closed down the goal for business in the third, sending the tilt to shootout. Rockford scored in the first round of the shootout on a miraculous shot from winger Greg Barber that Tapp seemed to save, but the puck went straight up in the air and as he searched for it, the puck landed behind him and trickled into the goal. The Mallards maintained their composure knowing that they sorely needed the win to stay alive in the playoff hunt, scoring in the fourth and fifth rounds to steal the game and come away victorious.

It wasn't all bad news for the IceHogs, though, as the club raised $56,825 in their 7th-Annual Charity Jersey Auction. All the proceeds raised go to the IceHogs Charitable Foundation which benefits many great Rockford area charities.

Next Home Game: Sunday, April 9 vs. Muskegon Fury. Game time is 3:05 p.m. The IceHogs and Fury clash at the MetroCentre in the back end of a home-and-home series The first 500 kids to the game will receive an IceHogs puck courtesy of the Insurance King. Also, don't forget your skates as Sunday is another "Skate With The Hogs" following the game.
