Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, WI - Madison was able to split the series with Wausau on Saturday afternoon to level their season record at 6-6 after a downpour in the first half of the game.
The Woodchucks got off to a fiery slow start against Mallards' starter Meade Johnson (3.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K) who made his first start of the season. Wausau loaded the bases in three of the first four innings and only scored one run. Wausau left seven on base in the first three innings. Johnson was able to navigate through lots of traffic on the basepaths to turn in a good start after being placed in the starting rotation. The Mallards used four more arms throughout the rest of the contest to snap a four-game losing streak at home.
The Ducks got on the board early with J.J. Rollon (2-3, HBP, SB) leading off the game with a single for the third consecutive night and later scored on a wild pitch from Chucks' starter Jack Wenninger. Madison was able to show their muscles at home for the first time this season in the 3rd inning with a solo home run from Rollon. Rollon's homer was the first of the season at Warner Park for Madison. In the 4th, first baseman Christian Rivera goes blastoff with a solo bomb to right field to extend the Mallards lead 3-1. Wausau was able to tie the game in the 5th and 7th innings on two RBI groundouts from Collin Reuter. The Mallards offense faltered for the next three innings until the bottom of the 8th. One-out singles from Javier Beal and Rivera put the go-ahead run on base with runners on the corners. With Scott Shaw at the plate, Woodchucks' reliever Calvin Shephard (L, 0-1) airmailed a pick-off attempt to first base, scoring Beal from third to take the lead. Sam Vomhof (S, 1) entered in the 9th and struck out two to put Madison back in the win column.
The Mallards hit the road for four consecutive games: two in Kokomo and two in Mequon against Lakeshore. There will be no Mallards broadcast on Mixlr in Kokomo, but there will be coverage in the series with the Chinooks. Game one with the Jackrabbits is slated for 4:05 PM.
