Madison Mallards News Release
Wausau, WI - The Mallards wrapped up a two-game series with the Wausau Woodchucks on Saturday night. The Woodchucks offense scored early and often for a second straight night as Wausau swept Madison from Athletic Park by a score of 17-8.
After scoring seven runs in the first two innings of yesterday's game, the Woodchucks came out firing again, this time against Mallards' left hander Ryan O'Hara. Wausau's first batter of the game, Brent Widder, hit a home run to take the lead immediately. Wausau would scrap for two more runs in the frame to take a 3-0 lead. For the second time in three trips to Wausau, the Mallards' starter threw 35 pitches in the 1st inning meaning the first arm could not return for the next frame. However, Madison's offense ignited in the top of the 3rd with six runs of their own as the Mallards' took their only lead of the day. Madison loaded the bases and the carousel began to take the only advantage of the series.
The Ducks turned to freshman Markell Dixon (L, 1-2, 1.2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 5 BB) in the 2nd inning. Following one scoreless inning of work, the Woodchucks would grab four runs in the 3rd. Following a rough performance from two Mallards' relievers as the Woodchucks walked six times in an inning and a half, Donnie Scott turned to three position players to finish out the game as the Mallards ran low on pitching. Wausau would score fourteen runs against a combination of Adrian Montilva, Declan Elias, J.T. Mabry (2B), Johnny Long (C), and Jack Merrifield (INF).
The Mallards continue their longest road trip of the season tomorrow in Mequon against the Lakeshore Chinooks from Capco Park as the Ducks look to snap a three-game losing skid. Action can be found on the Northwoods League website under the 'Live Action' tab at 5:05 PM.
