Quad City Mallards News Release

RAPID CITY, S.D. (February 26, 2013) - Mickey Lang scored once and added two assists as the Quad City Mallards rolled past the host Rapid City Rush 6-3 Tuesday night. With the win, the Mallards improved to .500 (23-23-6, 52 points) on the season and pulled into a tie with the Bloomington Blaze in the race for the eighth and final Central Hockey League playoff spot.

The Mallards broke the game open with three second period goals. At 4:55 of the second, Shayne Toporowski rifled a power play goal home from from the right wing circle to extend what had been a 2-1 Mallard lead to a pair of goals and chase Rapid City starting goaltender Danny Battochio from the game. Just one minute and twenty seconds later relief netminder Tim Boron was beaten for the first time by Darren McMillan's tip-in. Both teams were down a man when Matt Duffy snapped a one-timer past Boron from the right wing circle to extend the Mallard lead to 5-1 with just over a minute left in the period.

Battochio returned to the game at the start of the third period and saw the margin narrowed to 5-2 when Rapid City's Scott Wray knocked a crazy carom into the gaping Mallard net at 11:40 of the third period. Lang converted a penalty shot at 14:15 of the third to once more give the Mallards a four-goal lead and, though Jared Brown would roof a third Rapid City goal from the slot just 45 seconds later, the Mallards sailed home through the final five minutes.

The Mallards had set the tone for the night early by jumping out to a 2-0 first period lead. Anthony Perdicaro's drive from the right wing boards opened the scoring just one minute and 12 seconds into the game. The Mallards were shorthanded when Jason Dixon doubled the Quad City advantage with a blast from the right wing circle at 11:38. The Mallards' two goal lead would, however, last just 32 seconds before Jarret Konkle's power play goal from the high slot cut the gap to 2-1, but Quad City's second period blitz would prove to be too much for the Rush to overcome.

The Mallards return to action on the road Thursday night against the Blaze. The Mallards next play at home next Sunday, March 3 at 4:05 p.m. against the Fort Worth Brahmas.
