Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. (February 14, 2012) - Mickey Lang scored what proved to be the winning goal just 21 seconds after Eric Giosa tied the score at two in the third period and the host Quad City Mallards went on to defeat the Rapid City Rush 3-2 Tuesday night and move past the Rush into fourth place in the Central Hockey League's Turner Conference. With the win, the Mallards improved to 27-20-1 (55 points) and now sit one point ahead of the fifth place Rush (25-17-4, 54 points).

"We focused on making sure we played to our strengths and I thought we played pretty darn good," said Mallards coach and general manager David Bell. "We can build off a lot of things in that game. It was a huge game in the standings, it was a come from behind win...I like a lot of things we did."

Lang buried the tie-breaker from the right wing circle mere moments after Giosa's wraparound evened the score.

The Mallards found themselves in need of a third period comeback after the Rush rallied to overcome a one goal deficit in the second period.

Quad City opened the scoring when Brandon Marino rifled home Justin Chwedoruk's centering pass at 1:06 of the second period, only for the Rush to rebound with back-to-back goals. Mike Vaskivuo tied the game from the side of the net at 4:31 of the second. With just one minute and three seconds left in the period, Andrew Smale swept Konrad Reeder's centering feed past Mallard goaltender David McKee (31 saves) to give Rapid City a 2-1 lead. That advantage, however, would disappear in a matter of seconds in the third period.

After scoring the opener tonight Marino (29-36-65) remains tied for the league goal-scoring lead and just one behind Evansville's Todd Robinson in the race for the league point-scoring lead.
