February 14, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- With the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (21-21-6) looking to keep pace with the race for the final playoff spot in the Berry Conference they came up just short against a tough Evansville Icemen (28-13-4) squad, falling in a 4-3 shootout loss Tuesday night at the State Farm Arena.
Chad Langlias had the winner in the shootout for Evansville. Jason Dixon, Tomas Klempa, and Brandon Campos had the goals in regulation for the Bees. John Murray made 33 saves in the loss.
The Bees struck first when Jason Dixon, on a rush with Nicolas Rioux, took a nice pass through traffic and fired it past Icemen goaltender Pier-Olivier Pelletier to put the home team up by one. Evansville was quick to answer when Matt Gens scored on the power-play.
The Bees fired back at 4:19 when Dan Gendur redirected a pass through Pelletier to put the Bees back ahead by one. The Icemen were also quick to answer the tally Sean O'Conner tipped a Karl Linden shot past Murray.
The second period was relatively quiet compared to the quick strikes of the first.
That changed come the third when the Killer Bees were awarded a two minute 5-on-3 with five minutes left in regulation. It didn't take long for Campos to capitalize when he took a cross crease pass and fired from right below the right faceoff circle to beat Pelletier.
In what was a theme for the night the Icemen were able to match the tally when leading goal scorer Brian Bicek took advantage of a defensive breakdown in the Bees' zone allowed him to slip one past Murray to tie it in the closing minutes of regulation.
After a scoreless extra frame it went to a shootout. When the Icemen jumped ahead by two Klempa and Campos were able to tie it to send it to extra rounds, but it wasn't enough and Evansville sealed the deal and the extra point.
With Tulsa winning the Bees were able to stay four points behind the final playoff spot with the overtime point.
The Bees welcome back the Icemen tomorrow night, puck drop will be at 7 P.M.
