Mallards Rally Past Fort Wayne
December 4, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Quad City Mallards News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - Patrick Levesque scored twice and Kyle Jones made 31 saves in regulation and overtime before stopping all five penalty shots he faced as the Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the host Fort Wayne Komets 3-2 in shootout Friday night when Mike Zbriger converted the only successful penalty shot to extend the Mallards' winning streak to three games and stretch Quad City's regulation unbeaten streak to five games.
Zbriger buried the fifth Mallard penalty shot to give Quad City a 1-0 win in the shootout. Jones blanked the Komets in the shootout after stopping 17 shots in the third period alone and turning aside four more in overtime.
A pair of quick Fort Wayne goals put the Mallards in a hole early in the second period but, with Quad City on the power play, Levesque would scored from the doorstep to cut the gap to 2-1 at 9:30 of the second. At 4:48 of the third period Levesque broke in behind the Fort Wayne defense to even the score.
The Mallards found themselves in need of a comeback after Justin Chwedoruk tipped in the first goal of the night just 26 seconds into the second period with Fort Wayne on the man advantage and Tomas Klempa blasted home the Komets' second just 44 seconds later.
The Mallards tomorrow night will battle the Lumberjacks in Muskegon. The Flock is next in action on home ice on Friday, December 11 at 7:05 p.m. against the Dayton Gems. The first 1,000 fans through the doors for that game will receive free Mallards stadium scarves.
