Quad City Mallards News Release

DAYTON, Ohio (November 23, 2011) - Justin Chwedoruk buried the deciding penalty shot and Jared Brown also converted as the Quad City Mallards defeated the host Dayton Gems 4-3 in a shootout Wednesday night.

Brad Fogal stopped four of five Dayton shootout chances- only Brandon Naurato converted for the Gems- after making 35 saves in regulation and overtime.

Sudden death- and eventually the shootout- proved necessary after the Mallards and Gems combined to produce the final two goals of regulation in a span of just 15 seconds early in the third period.

At 2:48 of the third, Jason Kostadine buried a Jeremy Boyer centering pass to snap a 2-2 deadlock, give the Mallards their first lead and complete Quad City's rally from a 2-0 deficit. However, that lead would last mere moments before Dayton's Damian Surma charged into the goalmouth to even the score at three at 3:03.

The Mallard comeback started with a pair of second period goals. Quad City pulled within one when Brandon Marino jammed a power play goal in from the doorstep at 8:21 of the second. Darren McMillan tied the game at two with a wrist shot from the high slot at 15:13.

The Mallards were in need of a rally after the Gems jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead with breakaway goals from Ben Winnett just 1:40 into the game and Tim Hartung at the 9:01 mark.

The Mallards next play at home Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Fort Wayne Komets. Fans attending that contest will have the chance to take advantage of Black Friday merchandise specials at the Mallards Pro Shop in the i wireless Center.
