Arizona Sundogs News Release
N. RICHLAND HILLS, TX - Jeff Hazelwood burned his former team on Wednesday night after scoring a hat trick and the game-winner to lift the Arizona Sundogs to a 4-3 overtime win over the Texas Brahmas at the NYTEX Sports Centre
The victory gave Arizona (5-7-3) consecutive wins for the first time this season and pulled them within two points of Texas (7-5-1) for fifth place in the Berry Conference. It was also the Sundogs' 11th one-goal game of the season, leading the Central Hockey League. Arizona is 5-3-3 in those one-goal games.
Hazelwood's winner was generated by Jesse Perrin who centered a pass to the front of the net after carrying the puck into the offensive zone and behind the goal to the corner. Olivier Hotte also picked up an assist on the goal.
The Sundogs trailed 3-2, midway through the third period after Calin Wild put Texas ahead, but Hazelwood stuffed a loose puck past Brahmas' goaltender Mark Guggenberger at the left goal post to tie the game. It was the second straight game for the Sundogs that went past regulation to determine a winner -- Arizona defeated Tulsa the night before in a shootout.
Hazelwood opened up the game's scoring with his second goal of the season late in the first period from the left circle.
Special teams were on display in period two as the teams combined for three power play goals. Tyler Butler put Arizona up 2-0 with a slap shot from the point 6:59 into the period on a Kyle Hood assist. Texas came back to knot the game at 2-2 with a pair of goals less than five minutes apart midway through the period. Andrew Lackner from the blue line and Chad Woollard between the circles each scored for the Brahmas.
Levente Szuper earned the win with 30 saves in the contest. Gugagenberger took the loss, stopping 25.
Texas finished 2-for-7 on the power play. Arizona went 1-for-2.
All four of the meetings this season between Arizona and Texas have been decided by a goal. Each team has won two of those games. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in January for their final two matchups this season.
The Sundogs head home for a weekend pair against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. Friday's and Saturday's contest are both set for a 7:05 PM MST start.
The Arizona Sundogs are the Central Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes.
