Mallards Open 2011-12 Season at Home October 22
August 15, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. (August 15, 2011) - The Quad City Mallards of the "AA" Central Hockey League in conjunction with the CHL today announced a 66-game 2011-12 schedule that will see the Mallards open their second CHL regular season on home ice Saturday, October 22, at 7:05 p.m. against the reigning Turner Conference champion Rapid City Rush.
The Mallards' meeting with the Rush is the first of the Flock's 33 home games, 25 of which will be played on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. All eight of the Mallards' weeknight home games will be played on Tuesday evenings- making Tuesday "Hockey Night in the Quad Cities." The team will introduce a special promotion for all Tuesday night tilts this season that is still to be announced.
An announcement of the Mallards' themed nights and special group nights for the 2011-12 season will also be made in the coming days.
Each of the Mallards' three Sunday games will face off at 4:05 p.m., while all but one of the Flock's Friday, Saturday and Tuesday night contests will begin at 7:05 p.m. On Tuesday, February 28, the Mallards will host an Education Day game that will start at 10:05 a.m.
"Friday and Saturday night dates are gold to sports teams and we feel fortunate to have been able to produce such a good schedule in our first year as owners of the Mallards. I want to thank i wireless Center executive director Scott Mullen and Mallards senior consultant Byron Rucker for their collective efforts to work with the CHL to achieve such a strong schedule," said Jon Pritchett, CEO of CLUB 9 SPORTS, the Mallards' ownership group. "Most of all, we're delighted for our fans. We know having 25 weekend dates makes it a lot easier to get our Flock into the i wireless Center."
This season's schedule is laden with holiday dates, making it one of the Mallards' most festive slates to date. The Flock will stay busy on home ice throughout the holiday season, beginning with match-ups with Fort Wayne the night after Thanksgiving (Friday, November 25) and Missouri on Saturday, November 26. The Mallards will meet Wichita at home on Friday, December 23 and will play twice at the i wireless Center between Christmas and New Year's: on Tuesday, December 27 against Rapid City and Friday, December 30 against Dayton.
The Mallards will also take to the ice at home on both Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day. It is unlikely that love will be in the air when the Flock meets Rapid City on Tuesday, February 14, while black and blue- rather than green- may well be the colors of the evening on Saturday, March 17 when the Mallards tangle with the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees.
"Byron and Scott put a lot of time into this schedule in order to make it as fan friendly as possible," said Mallards head coach and general manager David Bell. "We will have some challenging stretches the same as any other team, but overall it is a fair schedule."
The CHL will again this season use an unbalanced schedule. The Mallards will play a total of 47 games against the other six Turner Conference clubs and will play 19 times against foes from the Berry Conference. The Mallards will play their first six games and 12 of their first 14 against intra-conference opposition.
Bell's troops will meet the Dayton Gems more often- ten times- than the Mallards face any other team. The Flock will also spend ample time in the company of its other traditional rivals. The Mallards will square off with the Fort Wayne Komets and Bloomington Blaze nine times each. Among its other conference foes, the Mallards will see the Missouri Mavericks eight times, the Rapid City Rush six times and the Evansville IceMen five times. At the other end of the spectrum, the Mallards will not play the Texas Brahmas during the regular season and will clash with Rio Grande Valley just once.
Other schedule highlights include:
- The Mallards will enjoy a five-game home stand- the Flock's longest of the season- starting Saturday, December 17 against Missouri and concluding December 30 against Dayton. Between December 17 and January 14, the Mallards will play nine of 11 games on home ice.
- The Mallards' two longest road trips will both last four games. The first of those two swings will begin Saturday, November 5 in Dayton and will finish Saturday, November 12 in Tulsa. The Flock's other four-game trip will kick off on Saturday night, December 10 in Dayton and will wrap up Friday, December 16 in Missouri.
- The Mallards will play their lone game against Rio Grande Valley on home ice. While the Mallards will play in Allen twice, the Americans will not visit the Quad Cities.
- After meeting the Gems on December 10, the Mallards will travel 1,807 miles from Dayton to Arizona to take on the Sundogs on December 13 and 14, making that journey the Flock's longest (one-way) trip this season. The Dayton-to-Arizona commute is more than 1,000 miles longer than the Mallards' longest jaunt (784 miles form Moline to Rapid City) last year.
- The Mallards will not quite spend the entirety of the holiday season at home. The Flock will visit Dayton for some quality holiday time together with the Gems on the night before Thanksgiving (Wednesday, November 23) and on New Year's Eve (Saturday, December 31).
- The Mallards will twice play seven times in a ten-day span- from January 13 through January 22 and from March 1 through March 10.
- The Mallards will play three games in three nights on eight occasions (including each of the four weekends in January): November 4, 5 and 6; January 6, 7, and 8; January 13, 14 and 15; January 20, 21 and 22; January 27, 28 and 29; February 10, 11 and 12; March 1, 2 and 3; and March 8, 9 and 10.
- The Mallards will close out the regular season on Saturday evening, March 24 on home ice against Bloomington.
