Madison Mallards News Release

Madison, WI - The Madison Mallards (0-1, 21-13) will continue a game against the Eau Claire Express that was previously rained out on May 30th tonight at 4:05 pm at the "Duck Pond" and will start the second game of a doubleheader no sooner than 7:05 pm. The second game will be a seven-inning contest.

Heavy rain hit the "Duck Pond" in the second inning of the game on May 30th with the score tied 0-0.

The Great Dane Duck Blind will open at 5:30 pm tonight. All fans that have a Great Dane Duck Blind ticket can enter the stadium when the gates open at 3 pm but will not be allowed into the Duck Blind until 5:30 pm.

Tonight is the Zimbrick Honda Military Appreciation Night with a Military Maynard Bobblehead Giveaway. The Badger Honor Flight Community Connection Night will also be held as well as a Schoep's Ice Cream Scoop Giveaway.

The Mallards were on the opposite end of a blowout Thursday night in Eau Claire just one day after winning the Northwoods League South Division First Half title with a blowout of their own in La Crosse.

The Mallards outhit the Express 10-9 but fell by a score of 12-5 yesterday. The Express used five-run innings in the third and seventh to put the game away, while the Mallards scattered their ten hits and couldn't get a rally going.

Greg Welsh (Penn State) suffered his first loss of the season and allowed seven runs (six earned) on five hits in just four innings. He falls to 4-1 on the year.

Geonte Jackson (San Jacinto CC), John LaPrise (Virginia), and Joe McCarthy (Virginia) all finished 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Mallards offensively.

Reilly Hovis (North Carolina) will make his second start of the season in Game 1 today. He allowed two runs (both earned) on just two hits in 4.1 innings at Battle Creek on June 29th and surrendered the loss. He walked three and struck out seven.

Nick Smith (Western Illinois) will get the nod in the second game. It will be his 11th appearance-first start-and looks to improve to 2-0. He has an ERA of 9.28 on the season but has been lights out in his last three appearances. He has given up just one hit, struck out six and hasn't walked a batter over his last four innings.

Zak Shockley (Marshall) will start in Game 1 for the Express while Peter Hendron (Santa Clara) will get the nod in the nightcap. Shockley has made five starts on the season while holding a 3.95 ERA and looks to improve to 2-0. He gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits in his last start but was lights out on June 21st against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. He allowed no earned runs and just three hits in seven innings to capture his first victory of the season.

Hendron is making his first start of the season and fourth appearance overall. He has allowed no runs on just two hits over his eight innings of work this season.

Ridiculous vs. the Righties

LaPrise has simply been on a tear since arriving with the Mallards this summer in the middle of June. He is hitting .464 with a .506 on-base percentage with 10 RBIs. His numbers against right-handed pitchers are even more striking. He is hitting .519 (27-for-52) with nine RBIs against righties but is hitting .294 against southpaws.

Up Next:

The Mallards start a two-game set against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Saturday at the "Duck Pond." First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm. They will close out the series on Sunday. First pitch for that game is slated for 5:05 pm.

Saturday is the Capitol View Events Pre-Game 1985k. It is also the Great Dane Superhero Night with a Super Hero Maynard Bobblehead Giveaway. Kids 12 and under in costume get a free ticket. There is also a Cost Cutters Mini Bat Giveaway. The post-game fireworks will be presented by Hy-Vee and the Salvation Army Community Connection Night will also be held.
