Mallards Defeat River Otters 2-1 In Defensive Struggle

December 31, 2004 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Missouri River Otters News Release

Backed by a big night in net from Jeff Reynaert, the Quad City Mallards defeated the Missouri River Otters 2-1 Friday night at the Family Arena.

In a period highlighted by four fights, the Quad City Mallards were the only team that could find the back of the net. Frantisek Skladany ripped a shot that Jason Tapp turned aside, but A.J. MacLean slid home the rebound to give the Mallards the lead. Among the fights, perhaps most impressive was George Cantrall pummeling Drew Otten with a flurry of right hand punches.

The Mallards struck first in the middle period on a broken play. Paul Cabana fired a shot at the Otters net, and the puck deflected to Skladany, who beat Tapp with a low wrister to the far post. Missouri got one back, however, with five minutes remaining in the period. Charlie Blyth gathered the puck behind the Mallards net, walked in front, and roofed a shot above the glove of Reynaert.

Despite firing 18 shots at Reynaert in the third period, the River Otters couldn't get any pucks into the net, and the Mallards won 2-1. Reynaert was tremendous in net for Quad City, making 35 saves in the win, while Tapp made 24 saves in defeat.

The Otters will host the Rockford IceHogs Saturday night at the Family Arena. The puck drops at 7:05, and all the action can be heard on KSLQ 104.5 FM and the B2 Webcast at www.riverotters.com.
