Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, IL â The Quad City Mallards have acquired forward Mike Thompson, who averaged 25 goals per year the past two seasons with the Elmira Jackals. Team President/General Manager Howard Cornfield made the announcement today. Thompson's acquisition is part of a three-team deal with Elmira and the Port Huron Beacons. It compensates the Mallards for the October deal in which they sent rookie defenseman Wade Winkler to Port Huron in exchange for future considerations.
Thompson, a 30-year-old native of St. Albert, Alberta, was in his third season with Elmira and his third year as the Jackals' team captain. In 2001-02, he scored 28 regular season goals (29 assists, 57 points) and five in the playoffs, leading the Jackals to the Colonial Cup Championship Series. He has been a very durable player, having participated in every Jackals regular season and playoff contest during the 2001-02 and 2002-03 campaigns.
Last season, Thompson tallied 48 points on 22 goals and 26 assists. This season, in 43 games with Elmira, he scored 13 points, on six goals and seven assists. He started his pro career in the ECHL, scoring 22 goals for Tallahassee and Johnstown in 1999-00. He joined the Jackals in 2000-01 and scored 17 goals in just 35 games. Prior to turning pro, Thompson played at the University of Alberta. He led them in scoring in 1998-99 as the Golden Bears won the CIAU National Championship.
Though Thompson brings 297 games of professional hockey experience to the Mallards, he is not counted as a veteran under UHL rules, because only 254 of those games were prior to this season. The limit is 280. No more than six veterans can be in the lineup.
Due to an illness in the family, Thompson is not expected to report to the Mallards until early next week.
The Mallards host the Adirondack IceHawks this Friday at 7:00 p.m. on Scratch and Score with Sprint Night. After a Saturday 6:30 p.m. game at Flint, the Mallards return home for i wireless Family Fun-Day Sunday, a 4:00 p.m. game against the Missouri River Otters. Tickets are on sale at The MARK box office, at all Ticketmaster locations, by phone at (563) 326-1111, and online by following the Tickets link at www.qcmallards.com.
