Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Mississauga ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors played host to the Barrie Colts tonight on a very pink rink, as they presented the second annual Paint the Rink Pink in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
The night concluded on a positive note, as the Majors defeated the Colts 4-2, while the 1st star of the game had gone to the fans themselves - all 3,721 of them - for coming out in support of breast cancer reasearch! Mississauga's record shifts to 30-22-1-2 on the season, as a result.
Mississauga's Kaspars Daugavins opened up the scoring on a man-advantage 5:55 into the 1st period with help from Brett Flemming and Tim Billingsley. But the Colts tied things up shortly after when Darren Archibald connected at 6:37 off of a lone pass from Stefan Della Rovere.
The action picked up in the 2nd period, as Barrie's Alex Hutchings scored 4:28 into the frame (unassisted) to grab a 2-1 lead. However, the Majors answered back with two goals of their own. Jared Gomes wired a shot into the Colts' net at 6:24 and then again at 12:15 (power-play) to make it 3-2. The assists went to Cameron Gaunce, Casey Cizikas, Devante Smith-Pelly and Tim Billingsley.
Then, Mike Pelech got the only goal in the 3rd period with only 31 seconds into the frame on the power-play to get the Majors ahead, 4-2, and they held on to take the win. Billingsley and Jordan Mayer were the helpers.
Chris Carrozzi got the start in net for the Majors and turned aside 11 shots, while JP Anderson took over a few minutes into the middle stanza and stopped 12 shots of his own. Peter Di Salvo made 24 saves for the Colts. Mississauga went 3 for 5 on the power-play, while Barrie closed out 0 for 8 on the night. The two other stars were Gomes (2nd) and Billingsley (3rd).
Mississauga continues their homestand tomorrow afternoon when they host the Sudbury Wolves at 4 p.m. Then, the Majors Family Day game takes place on Monday afternoon when the Brampton Battalion visits the Hershey Centre at 1 p.m. It will also be Scouts Day at the game, as they celebrate Lord Baden Powell's birthday! Popular cartoon characters including Diego, Dora the Explorer, Spongebob Squarepants and Patrick will be available for a Meet and Greet with fans from 12-1 p.m., prior to the start of the game.
The Majors continue their blow-out sale where every Majors replica jersey is priced at only $75.00 (PST and GST included). For more details, visit the Majors official merchandise store, the Maniac Shack, or call the Majors office at 905-502-7788.
