Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

One night after winning a shootout by a 3-2 score, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors lost a shootout by a 3-2 score.

Lino Martschini and Nick Ritchie scored in the shootout as the Peterborough Petes edged the Majors 3-2 on Saturday night in Peterborough, helping the Petes leap into fifth place in the tight Eastern Conference standings.

Mississauga (18-15-1-5) remained in eighth place in the standings thanks to picking up a single point. The Majors trail the Petes by just two points and Sudbury and Belleville by just one as five teams in the East are separated by just three points.

The standings are tight and so are the games, as the Majors edged the Petes 36-33 on the shots clock before finally dropping the extra point in the shootout.

"It seems that everybody gets a point most nights and that really keeps the standings tight," Mississauga General Manager/Head Coach James Boyd said. "We got off to a slow start and had to battle back a lot but we did.

"We were fortunate to get a power play goal late and that got us to overtime, but when you're in the shootout, it's really anybody's game. They had great goaltending and we had our chances, so we'll certainly take the point from this one."

Martschini opened the scoring for the Petes on the power play, assisted by Steven Trojanovic and Ritchie at 7:55 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Just under four and a half minutes later Jordan Mayer tied things up with his eleventh goal of the year and fifth goal in his last five games at 12:32. Kristoff Kontos picked up his first point as a Major with an assist on the goal, with Riley Brace picking up the second helper.

The Majors took a 2-1 lead when Scott Teskey scored his fourth goal of the season on the power play at 13:26 of the second period from Justin Rasmussen and Sergey Kuptsov. Shots were 11-9 in favour of the Petes during the first period, and 11-9 in favour of the Majors during the second for a two period total of 20-20.

The Petes drew even at the 5:42 mark of the third period on a goal by Cole Murduff, his first of the season, from Stephen Nosad to make it a 2-2 game. The Petes restored their early lead just four minutes later when JC Campagna set up Joey West for his 14th goal of the season at 9:46. The Majors scored their second power play goal of the game when Jamie Wise continued to improve his career best in goals with his 15th of the season from Mika Partanen and Brett Foy with 3:03 remaining to send the game to extra time and give the Majors at least a point in both games to start 2012.

After a scoreless overtime period the game went to the shootout, but luck ran out for the Majors, as Petes' goaltender Andrew D'Agostini stopped both Mayer and Wise to lead Peterborough to the extra point and the 3-2 win. Martschini and Ritchie both scored in the shootout for the Petes.

Spencer Martin made his first start for the Majors since leading Team Ontario to a bronze medal at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and made 30 saves in a losing effort. D'Agostini made 33 saves for the Petes in the win.

The Majors were 2-for-5 on the power play while the Petes were 1-for-7 with the man advantage.

Mississauga returns home and finishes their three-in-three when they host the Ottawa 67's at the Hershey Centre at 2 p.m. Tickets are available through www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Hershey Centre box office.
