Majors Fall To The 'Dogs

November 5, 2009 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

St. Catharines, ON- It took over-time but the Niagara IceDogs walked away with a 3-2 victory over the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors at the Gatorade Garden City Complex tonight. The loss drops the Majors to 12-4-1-0 on the season.

The game began as a physical contest, like the previous meetings this season and resulted in numerous power play chances for both sides, although neither could capitalize and the first period ended dead-locked at 0-0. Majors fans would receive a scare early in the period when captain Cameron Gaunce went down after blocking shot off the side of his leg. Gaunce missed a couple shifts and was back out before the end of the period.

The physical play continued into the second, and the scoreless draw was looking like it would continue until just seconds before the end of the period, when IceDogs forward Reggie Traccitto put the home side ahead. The period would close with Niagara ahead 1-0. As the Majors have proven over-and-over this season they are capable of coming back, and just eight seconds into the third, Devante Smith-Pelly tied the game with his tenth goal of the season. Casey Cizikas scored the game winner last Sunday against Sudbury and it looked like his goal just over five minutes after Smith-Pelly's would make it back-to-back game winners. The Majors dominated play in the final period but Niagara bounced back in the closing minutes and were able to draw even when Reggie Traccitto scored his second goal of the game. That score would hold up and force the teams into over-time. Alex Friesen scored the game winner at 3:19 into over-time, winning the game for Niagara.

Majors goaltender Chris Carrozzi, who was named OHL Goaltender of the Month for October made 33 saves in a losing effort. Mark Visentin countered with 46 saves and picked up the win for the IceDogs. Frisen's over-time marker got him "First Star" honours while Reggie Traccitto and Casey Cizikas rounded out the top three respectively.

The Majors will return home and host the Belleville Bulls tomorrow night, puck drop is 7:30 P.M. The Kingston Frontenacs will then come to town for an afternoon affair beginning at 2:00 P.M on Sunday.
